Achieved

So my mother remarks to me, as I am returning from having done my very first ever wedding, “Now all you need to do is a funeral.”

Thanks for that, Mom.

In all seriousness, I’m realizing that this next year is going to be very exhausting, and very exhilarating, all at the same time. I have a whole array of approaching firsts. My first baptism is coming up in just a few weeks, and my first wedding is but a day behind me. My first Palm Sunday is next Sunday…and my first Easter is a week after that.

I’ve been thinking about all of it as a sort of checklist, or like achievements from the X-Box Live system (among other places). I very much wish I got a little sound effect and a banner when I had gotten something new done, or had passed some other significant milestone.

I’ll just have to settle for the sense of accomplishment, I suppose, but that doesn’t alter the fundamentally good news today. I have officiated at my first wedding, and I pray to God there will be many more, and that the couples whose lives I connect with are as much a blessing to me as they were this weekend.

Amen.

I’d like for there to be badges that you earn as an adult, like the boy and girl scouts. You can proudly display them on a vest or sash, proving to all the world (ok, maybe just to yourself) that you really are an adult, even if you don’t always feel like one.
