I think I'll take exception to "disciple" as a temporary status, simply based on my experience in technology. No matter how good I got, I always had a guru...and I knew that my guru had a guru, and so on. I'm unwilling to declare that I'm done learning. My mentors in faith still have much to teach me. All that's changed is that sometimes now I get to teach them, which is a total blast. =)

I always value a good conversation. We friars (not sure if I'm the fool or Nick or Doug is- whatever), tend to speak hyperbolically. Saying "get rid of the sheep/pastor metaphor" is more likely to provoke a reaction and actually generate meaningful thought than just saying "try not to be so complacent". You make good points here.

The only place I may push you a bit is to say, while it is true that we are all situationally in need of a bit of care and leading, it is important in my mind to be clear about the ministry a baptized, confirmed member of the Body is Christ is called to - the very ministry of Jesus Christ. Frankly I think our expectations are abysmally low. Even the term "disciple" is a bit of a misnomer. A disciple is a student - it is a temporary status. One day you graduate and become the rabbi/teacher/apostle. All of the original twelve disciples graduated on Pentecost. They became apostles. Too many of us are adolescent in our faith.

Great post, Matt. It taught me something new---geocaching. I can't believe there is an outdoor sport that has been around for twelve years I don't know about! Goshen Turnpike is definitely a climb.
